Ode'imin Giizis, the Strawberry Moon, celebrates one of the sweetest gifts of summer and reminds us of the abundance that the land provides.

This painting imagines a young Anishinaabe woman returning to her family's summer camp with her newborn child. Her clothing reflects the influence of colonial society, yet her journey home speaks to something deeper: the enduring pull of family, identity, and belonging.

She carries two precious gifts. In her arms rests her infant, representing the next generation and the continuation of culture. Beside her hangs a basket overflowing with strawberries, one of the first medicines and one of the most cherished foods of the season. Together they symbolize nourishment for both body and spirit.

Grandmother Moon watches quietly from above, blessing the reunion between mother, child, family, and homeland.
