Grandmother Moon Series - The 2nd Moon of creation
Makwa Giizis, the Bear Moon, honours one of the most respected teachers of the forest.
Standing at the edge of the trees beneath a brilliant winter moon, Makwa emerges from the shelter of the evergreens into an open landscape covered in fresh snow. The composition captures a moment suspended between movement and stillness, inviting the viewer to pause alongside the bear.
For Anishinaabe people, Makwa is often associated with courage, healing, protection, and introspection. The bear reminds us that strength is not always loud or forceful. Sometimes it is found in knowing when to rest, when to observe, and when to step forward with purpose.
The warm orange moon contrasts with the cool winter blues, symbolizing the quiet warmth that remains even during the coldest seasons. Snow falls gently across the landscape, softening the forest and reminding us that winter is not an ending, but a time of preparation.
This painting reflects the balance between resilience and gentleness, encouraging us to embrace periods of reflection as an essential part of growth.
