Abalone Shell — Ceremonial Vessel
Naturally formed and beautifully iridescent, abalone shells have long been used in ceremony as a sacred vessel for burning medicines. Each shell carries the energy of the ocean, its inner surface reflecting soft hues of blue, green, pink, and pearl, while the outer shell remains raw and unpolished.
In many Indigenous teachings, the abalone shell helps bring together the Four Elements within a smudging practice:
- Water, held by the shell itself from its origin in the ocean;
- Earth, represented by the sacred medicines being burned;
- Fire, the flame that ignites them;
- and Air, the smoke that rises and carries intention.
Used with care and purpose, the abalone shell becomes more than a tool—it becomes a grounding presence within your practice.
